SHOW ME YOUR EMPATHY: wHY eMOTIONAL iNTELLIGENCE MATTERS IN OUR WORKPLACE
November 5, 2019
When it comes to business smarts and sense, oftentimes intellectual intelligence (IQ) coupled with charisma and confidence take the edge in the boardroom. Due to this, emotional intelligence (EQ) and the ability to show empathy tend to be overlooked. Organizations that prioritize qualities implying leadership competence (e.g. expertise in the hard skills of a job, invulnerability, overconfidence), over compassion and humility may lead to an imbalance of who is ultimately considered for leadership roles.
In this webinar, participants will gain a better understanding of what emotional intelligence is and why leaders should work to develop this important skill. Our panelists will breakdown the socialization of men, women, and members of marginalized groups, in relation to empathy, and how having high levels of EQ in your organization can lead to a more productive and inclusive workplace.
WEBINAR:
trust in the workplace: how to build it, keep it and rebuild it when it breaks
September 10, 2019
In 2010 the global communications firm Edelman uncovered something groundbreaking in its annual survey. For the first time in recent history, trust and transparency were named more important to corporate reputation in the United States than the quality of products and services. The 2019 Edelman Trust Barometer Special Report reveals the link between trust and the bottom line is even stronger today. The vast majority of consumers across markets in eight countries, of all ages, incomes and gender say that brand trust is essential to buying.
In our seventh Advance Program webinar “Trust In The Workplace: How To Build It, Keep It and Rebuild It When It Breaks” featured speaker Lisa Shumate, Associate Vice President and General Manager of Houston Public Media, will discuss trust in the public media landscape and present a case study to shine a light on practical information every staff and manager can use every day.

webinar:
ADDRESSING AND MITIGATING IMPLICIT BIAS
July 18, 2018
This webinar is a joint offering by PMBA and Public Media Women in Leadership.
Consider this: Have you ever met a job candidate who had a great resume and the necessary level of experience but then thought to yourself, “there’s just something about this person I don’t like”? Perhaps your implicit bias made the decision for you. As a consequence, you may have let the perfect applicant move onto the next best employer.
Also known as unconscious bias or implicit social cognition, our implicit biases are the stereotypes or attitudes that affect our thoughts, actions, and decisions without our awareness. Today’s public media leaders and HR professionals require a comprehensive understanding of the impact of implicit bias in our workplaces and must develop ways to mitigate and alleviate these biases as we prepare for the future of public media.
This presentation covers the basics of why we have implicit biases, how they can impact our personal and business decisions, and how individuals and organizations can diminish the negative impact of these biases.
Content Leader: Consuela Steward, Executive Assistant at KPBS in San Diego and chair of its internal Diversity Council.
Learning Objectives:
Understand what implicit bias is and the psychology and science behind our biases.
Learn how these biases impact our workplaces.
Develop easy yet effective ways to mitigate the impact of these biases in our workplaces (Hint: It starts with creating an inclusive culture).
Please feel free to share this webinar information with colleagues in the Public Media system!
Webinar:
Getting honest about emotion at work.
Tactics every woman can use!
May 15, 2018
We’ve all done it. Felt the eyes welling up unexpectedly at work. Flat out bawled in front of our peers, staff, or boss. Hidden in the bathroom only to tell people later, “oh, yeah, it’s allergies.” Do we need to get it together or let it out? Is everyone secretly thinking bad thoughts about us? Well, prepare to have your mind blown because we are going to dig into actual research on the subject of showing -- or bottling up -- emotions on the job.
Join us for a fascinating and surprising conversation between KUOW’s Jeannie Yandel, host of a new, very cool (almost named) podcast about tactics for combating sexism at work, and the incredible Anne Kreamer, formerly with Sesame Workshop, and author of “It’s Always Personal: Emotion in the New Workplace,” a book exploring the new realities of emotion in the workplace. Anne is also a frequent contributor to Fast Company, Harvard Business Review, and many more.
This webinar is a must-listen for women (and men!) at every level, whether you’re an “emoter” or not. You either are one, work with one, or manage one! Expect to walk away with real tactics that will change how you think and react to emotion at work.

Webinar:
Resiliency Through Change
March 14, 2018
We all face, at work and at home, a steady stream of changes and challenges that test us and sometimes even push us to our limits. And while we all have within us the innate and learned ability to deal with much of what life throws at us, we all can get even better at remaining strong and resourceful in the face of great adversity. In striving to fulfill our intentions and purpose at work, at home, and in our communities, we are called to grow in our capacity to see challenge where others see threat, to show care and concern where others pull back, and to rise and engage where others resist.
In this workshop, you will learn empirically-based resilience practices and solutions for thriving through adversity and for supporting others along their own path to adaptation and commitment. These solutions draw from various disciplines including neuroscience, positive psychology, biology, well-being, engagement, and human performance. Participants can download documents for following along in the webinar, working through the exercises, starting to create their own resilience development plan, and for applying the principles and practices after the webinar.
Upon webinar completion, participants will...
Understand what is resilience, what is thriving, how they are related, and why it matters to their own resilience at work.
Understand the science behind resilience and what this implies for our ability to remain resilient in the face of challenge and adversity.
Learn and apply several resilience practices that will benefit them and which they can use to support their own changes at work and in their lives outside of work.

Speaking While Female - Strategies to Be Heard While Overcoming Unconscious Bias and Cultural Assumptions
May 26, 2016
For women today, speaking up in the workplace can be like walking a tightrope. Claiming a seat at the table and voicing ideas can be challenging, but are expected of leaders, regardless of gender. If you are too timid you won’t be heard, but statistics show that women who do speak up are often judged as too aggressive. Men and women can combat these stereotypes by learning which communication styles work best with different personality types and how to not use or be manipulated by mansplaining and manterrupting. In this session we examine how these behaviors and attitudes undermine the impact of women at work. We offer practical suggestions for how leaders can ensure all employees’ ideas are considered. And, we engage with our webinar audiences throughout the session via live polling.
